On August 1, 2007 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an UPDATE. The reason for the update is they feel that many consumers may not be aware of the May 2007 recall of Complete MoisturePlus Multipurpose Contact Lens Solution manufactured by Advanced Medical Optics (AMO).

The AMO product has been linked to a number of cases of a painful eye disease, Acanthamoeba keratitis. This infection can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigation linked this rare condition to the use of Complete MoisturePlus Multipurpose Contact Lens Solution. The CDC determined that patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis were at least 7 times more likely to have used the AMO Complete MoisturePlus solution. Based on the CDC findings, the FDA requested that AMO recall their product. MoisturePLUS was voluntarily recalled on May 25, 2007.

Litigation naming vision products manufacturer, AMO and its former parent company, Allergan, brought on behalf of those injured by MoisturePlus are expected to grow significantly over the next several months. It has been noted that many of the victims are minors. AMO specifically targeted teenage contact lens wearers in their marketing campaigns. Young people appear to be particularly susceptible to the risk of ineffective lens disinfectants. According to law suits, studies published well before the product was recalled showed the disinfectant in Complete Moisture Plus was vastly inferior to hydrogen peroxide as well as other multipurpose contact lens solutions on the market in eradicating Acanthamoeba. The plaintiffs allege that AMO was aware of the ineffectiveness of their product but concealed that information from consumers.

Symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis are similar to common eye infections, so it is necessary to get a correct diagnosis as quickly as possible. Early diagnosis is important for effective treatment.

Symptoms include:

  • Eye pain
  • Redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Sensation of something in the eye
  • Excessive tearing
