Shocking News! Bedbugs Discovered in Several Trusted Hotels
It has been reported that cases of bed bugs in hotels, motels, inns and other lodging facilities have recently been on the rise. What once was considered a long-past problem, and a tale in children’s rhymes, is now becoming a nightmare of a reality.
Bedbugs have not only invaded New York city, where they have found their way into retail stores, movie theaters, and even the Empire State Building, but several cases of bedbugs have also been reported in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Today, cases of bedbugs are emerging throughout the country and have been the subject of many news stations and reports.
Bedbugs are flat and wingless. They are oval-shaped and reach up to about ¼ inch in length. Bedbugs have not been known to transmit disease, but being bitten by one of these insects can result in itching, swelling, and even severe allergic reactions. Bedbugs reproduce at an astonishing rate. In a lifetime, females can produce 500 eggs. Sometimes they produce 5 eggs per day.
To make matters worse, bedbugs find inconspicuous hiding spaces, and can grow rapidly without being detected. They hide in small crevices and nooks, close to where people sleep. They have even been reported to hide in smoke detectors on the ceilings of people’s home or hotel rooms. The recent cases of bedbugs have been so extreme that they have led the EPA and U.S. Center for Disease Control to issue a statement regarding the problematic creatures. The statement has suggested that the re-emergence of bedbugs may, in part, be a result of increased human travel and the ability of insects to resist pesticides.
Areas that may be particularly prone to bedbugs include homeless shelters and college rentals or student housing, because of the large incidence of people moving in and out of these facilities. However, bedbugs may also be found in upscale hotels and homes, because of their ability to travel and spread quickly and reproduce frequently.
Massachusetts is a state in which the resurgence of bedbugs has been reported. In fact, according to a Terminix survey, Boston is reportedly the 11th worst city for bedbug infestation.
It may be difficult to get rid of bedbugs once they are detected. Usually, they remain hidden during the day and come out only at night while adults and children are sleeping. Their bites are also painless, so they may attack without anyone even knowing. Sometimes, people discover that they have been attacked only after they wake up to discover the marks of the bites. Bedbugs can even go months without a meal and still flourish.
Because bedbugs are not disease carriers, many states’ Board of Health departments are not likely to track them. Revenues for termination and pest companies resulting from the removal of bedbug treatments have jumped drastically since 2006.
