Have You Taken Benicar and Suffered a Serious Side Effect?
Read Below Why You May Have a Claim.
What is Benicar?
Benicar (olmesartan) is a medication that is used to control high blood pressure. It was approved by the FDA in April 2002 for sale on the market. In 2012, more than 10 million prescriptions of Benicar were dispensed to almost 2 million patients, making it a huge hit for its manufacturer, Daiichi Sankyo.
What Are the Common Benicar Side Effects?
Some people have suffered serious side effects from Benicar such as intestinal problems known as sprue-like enteropathy. The most common and serious side effect suffered is chronic and severe diarrhea and it is often responsible for the other side effects.
Signs of sprue-like enteropathy:
- Chronic, severe diarrhea
- Stomach pain
- Substantial weight loss
- Permanent intestinal damage
- Kidney failure
In extreme cases, side effects have caused hospitalization and long term complications. These problems have sometimes been confused with Celiac Disease because of the similarity of the symptoms.
Why Are Some People Being Misdiagnosed?
Numerous patients that have suffered from enteropathy linked to Benicar are being misdiagnosed as having Celiac Disease. Celiac Disease is an illness that causes similar symptoms like those caused by enteropathy. More specifically, it is a disease that causes intestinal inflammation in response to eating gluten.
The side effects from Benicar can be easily misdiagnosed as Celiac Disease, however the difference is in the treatment. For Celiac sufferers, removing gluten from the diet will help lessen the symptoms of the disease. The only treatment for these side effects is stopping the use of the drug.
Medical professionals were unaware of the link between Benicar and enteropathy. If you have been misdiagnosed with Celiac Disease you are not alone. Many lawsuits are being filed alleging that the manufacturer failed to warn that there was a risk. An experienced Benicar lawyer can file a Benicar lawsuit on your behalf, and can also advise you as to whether you have a case and answer all your questions.

What is the FDA Doing About Benicar?
On July 3, 2013 the FDA announced label changes for Benicar, and its generic, olmesartan. Specifically, this drug must carry a warning that it “can cause intestinal problems known as sprue-like enteropathy.”
The label change was based upon “clear evidence of an association between olmesartan and sprue-like enteropathy.” In particular, a review of reported adverse events showed 23 serious cases where patients suffered diarrhea and excessive weight loss.
According to the FDA, these Benicar side effects can appear months or even years after an individual has been taking this high blood pressure medicine. People who have suffered these complications should talk to their doctor as soon as possible. In general, the symptoms of sprue-like enteropathy cleared up after the individual discontinued use of the drug. The experienced Benicar lawyers that we work with can answer any questions you have regarding this drug.
Timeline of Benicar Lawsuits and Events:
July 3, 2014 – A Benicar lawsuit was filed by a woman in San Diego the manufacturer, alleging that the blood-pressure drug caused her to suffer sprue-like enteropathy. As a result of the side effects she was hospitalized for an extended period of time. She personally believes that her doctors were unable to properly treat her for her condition because they were unaware of the connection between Benicar and enteropathy. She alleges that the manufacturer failed to warn about the severe intestinal side effects linked to Benicar.
July 24, 2014 – According to a case report in Gastrointestinal Medicine, Benicar has been linked to a severe case of sprue-like enteropathy that caused a colon perforation. A report was published of a woman who was hospitalized with colon perforation after taking it for three years. She reported suffering severe diarrhea, and as a result within three months lost 45 pounds. One study has been released that revealed the drug is linked to severe gastrointestinal problems. The French study linked Benicar to a 10-fold increased risk of hospitalization for gastrointestinal symptoms, when compared to patients on other blood-pressure drugs.
August 6, 2014 – A Benicar lawsuit was filed by a Louisiana woman who took the drug and endured more than three years of intestinal side effects because she was misdiagnosed. She filed suit against the manufacturer alleging that the drug caused her suffering.
September 24, 2014 – A study published in Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics reports 36 cases of sprue-like enteropathy in patients on Benicar. This confirms other studies suggesting a causal connection to this serious side effect. Conclusions of the study were based on data from 36 people in France, who had enteropathy after taking the medication.
October 17, 2014 – A Benicar lawsuit has been filed against the manufacturer by a woman from Ohio, who claims that it caused her to develop a severe, chronic intestinal illness.
