Children’s Motrin (ibuprofen) is given to treat cold and flu symptoms in kids between the ages of 2 and 11. In June 1995, the FDA approved this drug for sale on the market by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, which has since been acquired by Johnson & Johnson. It has also been approved for over-the-counter sales. On the product’s website, McNeil states that the safety of the drug “is supported by one of the largest and most rigorous children’s clinical studies ever conducted (i).” It is available in two forms:
- Infants’ Motrin
- Children’s Motrin

The manufacturer warns that this drug side effects such as stomach bleeding and allergic reactions. If any of these reactions occur you should discontinue use and seek medical help immediately. The active ingredient in Children’s Motrin ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). In some cases, NSAIDs can cause severe stomach bleeding (ii). Additionally, allergic reactions can cause swelling, which can be life-threatening if its affects a child’s airways. One infrequent but very serious side effect that most medicine manufacturers have not included on their product labels is Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Children’s Motrin
Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a serious allergic reaction that has been linked to Motrin for children. SJS can worsen and turn into a condition known as toxic epidermal necrolysis (TENS). The first signs of these conditions are flu-like symptoms but as the reaction worsens it becomes a painful rash. The rash can blister and cause lesions in the skin. This rash can also cause large portions of the outer layer of skin to die and peel off the body. In some cases, SJS skin problems are so severe that they must treated in the burn unit of a hospital. SJS and TENS also affect the mucous membranes such as the eyes, mouth, and other parts of the body (iii). SJS and TENS can cause children to suffer lifelong conditions like the following:
- Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Lung damage (reduced lung capacity)
- Scarring and disfigurement
- In some severe cases, children have died
Children’s Motrin is the primary suspect in causing at least 46 incidents of SJS that have been reported to the FDA. Families that have experienced the pain and worry caused by SJS and TENS, need to know that there are support and legal options available. For more than 10 years, the Stevens Johnson Syndrome Foundation has been raising awareness about this condition and helping families deal with life after SJS. You should also consider talking to a personal injury lawyer about seeking compensation for the medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages you have sustained.
Children’s Motrin Lawsuits and Recall
In the past ten years, newspapers have followed the pain and suffering Children’s Motrin has caused kids like Kaitlyn Langstaff, Sabrina Johnson, and Simon Saw. Additionally, two Children’s Motrin lawsuits have resulted in jury awards. In May 2011, a jury awarded Brianna Maya $10 million for SJS injuries caused by this drug. She suffered serious injuries to her eyes and lungs that have severely limited her abilities (iv). Most recently, in February 2013, a jury awarded Samantha Reckis and her family $63 million for her injuries. She lost 90% of her skin, went blind, and suffered brain damage due to SJS and TENS (v).
In 2010, McNeil and Johnson & Johnson recalled over 40 medicines including Children’s Motrin. The Children’s Motrin recall was issued because the plants manufacturing these products were cited for a number of violations by the FDA and were producing tainted drugs. Samples taken from these plants showed that certain drugs contained 24% higher concentrations of the active ingredient than they should. Additionally, there were high levels of contaminants that should not have been present. Higher concentrations of the active ingredient can cause drug overdoses, which in turn lead to serious side effects like liver damage and failure (vi).
