CooperVision has made several recent announcements regarding a recall of their Avaira Toric Contact Lenses. The Avaira Toric lenses are silicone hydrogel contacts that are made for patients with astigmatism. The recall affects roughly eight million pairs of contact lenses worldwide, including 600,000 pairs in the United States. CooperVision informed eye health professionals about the recall in August 2011, but only notified the public in October 2011 at the FDA’s urging. CooperVision Lenses are sold at stores such as Costco, Wal-Mart, and LensCrafters, although a full list of retailers who sold the recalled lens has not yet been made available to the public.
