DePuy manufactures several different models of hip replacements. The DePuy Pinnacle model is a predecessor to the ASR and ASR-XL models, which were recalled by the Food and Drug Administration on August 24, 2010. The Pinnacle model has been on the market since 2002, and the ASR and ASR-XL models have been used since 2005. The Pinnacle implant can be installed with three different types of liners: metal, plastic, or ceramic. The Pinnacle model is similar to the ASR and ASR-XL models because it can be installed as a metal-on-metal implant, and these types of implants can disperse metal particles into the body.
Shortly after being introduced to the market, DePuy received complaints that the DePuy Pinnacle model was defective as early as 2002. Since then, many patients and doctors have reported problems with the DePuy Pinnacle model that are similar to the problems with the ASR and ASR-XL models. These problems may include the following:
- Loosening components
- Improper alignment of components
- Infection resulting from the hip implant
