Actavis Totowa Issues CLASS1 NATIONWIDE RECALL of Digitek
(digoxin tablets, USP, all strengths)

April 29, 2008, manufacturers of Digitek, issued a recall of all strengths of its oral tablets. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) deemed the Digitek recall a Class I Recall. Class I recalls are conducted when dangerous or defective products that predictably could cause serious health problems or death are released.

Digitek is used to treat abnormal heart rhythms and heart failure. Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. distributes Digitek under a “Bertek” label and is also distributed by UDL Laboratories Inc, under a “UDL” label. The all-lot recall is due to the possibility that tablets with double the appropriate thickness may have been released. Double strength tablets could result in an elevated risk of digitalis toxicity in patients with renal failure.

Digitalis toxicity can cause among other things:

  • Low blood pressure
  • Dizziness
  • Cardiac instability
  • Bradycardia (a heart rate below 60bpm)
  • Irregular or slow heartrate
  • Can lead to death

PLEASE DO NOT STOP TAKING ANY PRESCRIPTION DRUG, INCLUDING DIGITEK, UNTIL YOU HAVE FIRST SPOKEN TO YOUR DOCTOR.
