Are There Medical Studies About Eliquis?

medical study being performed by the FDA on Eliquis and its side effects

A medical study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in September of 2011 and they found that Eliquis was superior to warfarin. The study stated that Eliquis caused less bleeding and had a lower mortality rate than the older blood thinner.

Another study was published in August 2013 and it also associated Eliquis with a reduction in major bleeding. The next year, a study was published in the Journal of Neurosurgery on the new generation blood thinners, including Eliquis. This study alleged that these medications still do not have a specific antidote to reverse the blood thinning effects.

Are There Blood Thinner Lawsuits?

This is not the first time a new blood-thinner has generated lawsuits. Eliquis can be considered the third drug in its class to have initiated thousands of lawsuits. The first two new blood thinners to start the lawsuit trend were; Pradaxa (dabigatran) and Xarelto (rivaroxaban). In May of 2014, there were more than 4,000 lawsuits involving Pradaxa which settled for $650 million.

Blood thinner lawsuits involving Eliquis which increases the risk of uncontrolled bleedingEliquis, manufactured by Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb, was approved for use by the FDA in 2012 as a blood thinner. Like other “new-generation anticoagulants”, Eliquis has been marketed as being superior to warfarin because it does not require regular monitoring.

These new blood thinners, however, have been linked to an increased risk of uncontrolled bleeding with no existing antidote. Warfarin also prevents blood from clotting, but it has an antidote in the form of vitamin K. If patients who take Warfarin experienced uncontrolled bleeding received medical attention in time the anticoagulant effects could be reversed. New generation blood thinning medications do not currently have an approved antidote and there is no way to reverse the effects in the event that bleeding occurs.

Is Eliquis Similar to Xarelto and Pradaxa?

There were numerous deaths and serious uncontrollable bleeding events, among other side effects, linked to the popular prescription drug thinner Pradaxa as well as the newer blood thinner Xarelto. Eliquis is very similar to both.

As of June 2015, there are approximately 2600 pending Pradaxa lawsuits and 430 pending Xarelto lawsuits. Many of the victims have received compensation for their injuries after taking these medications. Eliquis could be on the same dangerous path as Pradaxa and Xarelto. There have been many deaths and serious bleeding events linked to Xarelto and litigation continue. Just like victims in the Pradaxa and Xarelto cases, you could be entitled to compensation for your injuries.

Injuries are often caused because the drugs were either poorly designed or the patient was not sufficiently warned about the drug’s dangers, like in the cases of Pradaxa and Xarelto. Anyone who has been injured by this blood thinning drug should talk to an experienced Eliquis lawyer about filing a lawsuit to receive the compensation they deserve.
