In March 2008, a New Jersey man filed a lawsuit against Organon, the manufacturer of NuvaRing, for his wife’s death. She died because a blood clot caused a blockage in her lung. Her husband’s wrongful death suit alleges the makers and developers of Nuva Ring were aware of the increased risk of blood clots and failed to properly warn users about the side effects. More than 50 other NuvaRing lawsuits have been filed against Organon. If you or a loved one suffered as a result of NuvaRing, you may benefit from the legal advice of a personal injury attorney.
NuvaRing or Nuva Ring is a once a month contraceptive that consists of a small plastic ring that is inserted into the vagina. Throughout a three-week period hormones are released from the ring, followed by the removal of NuvaRing for one week. NuvaRing was the first hormonal vaginal contraceptive approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Approval was received in October 2001 and marketing of NuvaRing in the United States began in July 2002.
NuvaRing works to prevent pregnancy by releasing high levels of the hormones, estrogen and progestin. Progestin stops the ovary from releasing an egg. The lining of the uterus becomes thinner to inhibit a fertilized egg from implanting. The use of such hormones classifies NuvaRing as a third generation contraceptive. While effective at preventing pregnancy, prolonged exposure to higher than normal levels of such hormones can lead to blood clots and pulmonary embolisms. In 1995, studies of third generation contraceptives found users’ risk of blood clots was twice that of second generation users.
In 2003, The New England Journal of Medicine published an article that such contraceptives containing progestin significantly increased the risk of potentially fatal blood clots compared to other birth control remedies. Recent events continue to show the serious side effects of NuvaRing. In 2007, Public Citizens, a consumer advocacy organization, petitioned the FDA to ban third generation birth control due to the increased risk of life threatening blood clots.
