After a California man was awarded $48 Million for the severe injuries he suffered as a result of taking Motrin for muscle pain, Johnson & Johnson is appealing the jury’s decision claiming the jury’s verdict form responses were confused. The pharmaceutical giant claims the jury found that Motrin is not substantially dangerous and therefore cannot find the company negligent for failing to warn consumers about the potentially life threatening side effects. The plaintiff in the case was a teenager when he developed toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) after taking Motrin. TEN is a more serious form of Stevens – Johnson syndrome (SJS), which can lead to organ damage, blindness, and even brain damage. Many of those injured after taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as Motrin, have filed Steven-Johnson Syndrome lawsuits after developing the condition.

What Is Stevens – Johnson Syndrome?

SJS is a severe toxic allergic reaction to pain reliving medications such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, and Tylenol that causes a burn-like rash to appear on the skin. The rash can affect any area and leaves the body highly susceptible to infections and scars. An SJS reaction is usually characterized by flu-like symptoms followed by an outbreak of a skin rash. In more serious cases, the rash can spread and effect the entire body. These more serious rashes are classified as TENs reactions. Both of these syndromes often require intensive emergency treatment in the burn unit of a hospital and can cause serious organ damage or even death.

Is Motrin Safe To Use?

Occurrences of SJS and TENs are rare. However, the medications that can cause these reactions do not always list the possible side effects on their warning labels. While many prescription pain killers do list SJS and TENs as possible complications, over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol and Motrin are not yet required to do so. Many SJS lawsuits are based on the presumption that over-the-counter medications should warn consumers about their risks. Children can be particularly at risk when being treated with Children’s Tylenol or Motrin, and it is important to closely monitor symptoms and seek medical attention promptly if any signs of SJS arise.
