On March 12, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a new warning regarding the potentially fatal irregular rhythms that can occur among patients taking Zithromax. The warning was prompted by two studies that showed abnormal changes in the electric activity in the heart in patients taking Zithromax. The second study is explained in detail below. The FDA warns patients taking Zithromax to keep checking for signs that may show disruptions from regular heart rhythm. Signs include:
- QT interval prolongation
- Low blood levels of potassium or magnesium
- Slower than normal heart rate
- Use of certain drugs used to treat abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias
Another particularly dangerous and potentially fatal condition that could be caused by Zithromax is “Torsades de Pointes,” which is a type of irregular heartbeat. Look out for symptoms of Torsades de Pointed, which include palpitations, fainting, ventricular fibrillation, cardiac arrest, and even death.
Zithromax (or more commonly known as Z-Pak) has been linked to increased risks of some severe side effects such as heart attacks, liver damage, blindness, and even death. The drug was initially approved in 1994, and prescribed for bronchitis, sinus infections, and pneumonia. In May 2012, a study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showing that Z-Pak patients have increased risk of heart trouble leading to heart attack, as compared to those who take other antibiotics or no antibiotics at all. A 14-year study of the Vanderbilt University revealed that for ever million courses of drug treatments, there are 85 cases for every 1 million Zithromax courses of treatment that led to deaths. Another popular antibiotic has only 32 deaths for every million drug treatments.
