Patients taking the blood pressure drug Benicar (olmesartan) should be aware that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recently mandated new label changes. These changes warn that this medicine can cause serious intestinal problems which doctors call sprue-like enteropathy. These intestinal problems manifest themselves most commonly as chronic, severe diarrhea.
The reason this side effect has caused such alarm is that it can cause fatigue, dehydration, and massive weight loss. In one case a patient suffered such severe diarrhea that he lost more than one-hundred pounds (100 lbs). The possibility of such dramatic Benicar side effects should be enough to give all patients using this drug pause. The fact is that all patients using over-the-counter or prescription medication should monitor the effects the medicine is having on their bodies.
One reason why such severe weight loss may occur in some patients is that these Benicar side effects are sometimes misdiagnosed as Celiac Disease, which is an adverse reaction to gluten. This condition has similar symptoms to Benicar including abdominal pain, cramping, and diarrhea. In some cases, patients taking this drug were advised that a gluten-free diet would solve their stomach problems only to have them persist. These recurring misdiagnoses were first discovered by doctors at the Mayo Clinic in 2012. The doctors evaluated 22 patients suffering symptoms similar to Celiac Disease but this condition was ruled out in each case. Instead, the common thread connecting these patients was their use of olmesartan (i). In 2013, another study described patients with unexplainable sprue-like enteropathy and villous atrophy. It was later revealed that these patients had all been taking Benicar (ii).
