Cook IVC Filter MDL

Another trial has been scheduled in the ongoing litigation against Cook Medical in connection with faulty IVC filters. This second bellwether trial is scheduled to be heard in late April 2018. Thousands of similar cases have been filed alleging that the Cook IVC filters are dangerous and have caused serious injuries. Victims allege that the filters are prone to migrate or break apart and puncture arteries and organs, leading to severe complications. Many patients who have been treated with the Cook IVC filters have required invasive surgery in order to remove the devices. The decision was made to consolidate all of these claims into a multi-district litigation (MDL) after so many IVC filter lawsuits were filed due to the fact that they involve common issues.

What are IVC Filters?

Cook IVC filterInferior vena cava (IVC) filters are small, metal, cage-like devices, which are used to treat patients who are prone to develop blood clots. The purpose of the IVC filter is to catch blood clots in the veins before they reach major organs like the heart or lungs. Most of the time, the filters are used in patients who have been unable to tolerate medications that reduce blood clots.

These filters are designed to be temporary and should be removed from the body after a certain period of time. However, these devices have been found to cause serious complications such as organ perforation, severe pain, heart attack, internal bleeding, pulmonary embolism, and even death.

Why are IVC Filters Dangerous?

IVC filters can break apart inside the body, and the broken pieces of the filter travel in the bloodstream puncturing major arteries along the way. The devices have also been found to come loose and migrate throughout the body causing serious complications and damage to major organs such as the heart and lungs. When an IVC filter fails, the resulting damage can be severe and even life threatening. Patients who suffer the consequences of a faulty IVC filter often require emergency surgery to remove the filter from their body.
