Depakote MedicationThe Depakote infographic explains that lawsuits are currently being filed and patients may be able to recover medical expenses, lost income, or other related losses. Depakote (also known as divalproex sodium, valproate, and valproic acid) has been approved to treat bipolar disorder, seizures, and migraine headaches. This drug was originally approved by the FDA in 1983 and it is now manufactured and marketed by Abbott Laboratories. In recent years, concerns have been raised about the risk of birth defects and other side effects like Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS)(i).

Pregnant woman taking DepakoteThe FDA has warned that Depakote may increase the risk of birth defects like cleft lip or palate, impaired cognitive development, neural tube defects, and spina bifida. The first warning came in December 2009 when data from a national pregnancy registry showed that baby malformations were more common among babies whose mothers had taken this drug. More recently in June 2011 and May 2013 the FDA has warned that studies have shown that valproic acid drugs increased the risk of impaired cognitive development and low IQ among children whose mothers had taken these drugs (ii). If you believe that your child’s development was affected by the use of this drug during pregnancy, then you should talk to a Depakote lawyer.

Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a hypersensitivity reaction that is triggered by certain drugs. SJS begins as a painful rash and quickly spreads. In addition, it can inflame tissue throughout the body which can permanently damage the eyes, lungs, and other organs. Depakote’s prescribing information warns of such a hypersensitivity reaction. “Although there have been a limited number of reports, many of these cases resulted in hospitalization and at least one death has been reported.” If a patient suffers this kind of reaction, he or she should immediate discontinue using the drug and contact a doctor (i).
