The law offices of d’Oliveira & Associates – in recognition of a nationwide trend of increased injuries from texting and driving – is seeking to help reduce such accidents through increased awareness of drivers who text while driving. To this end, the RI car accident attorneys at d’Oliveira & Associates have begun a public service campaign to highlight the dangers of texting and driving.
Public Service Campaign Seeking to Prevent Car Crashes Caused by Texting While Driving
“I keep reading about the increase of serious injuries and deaths from people texting while driving,” said Attorney Paul d’Oliveira, Founding Attorney of d’Oliveira & Associates. Because of what he has read, Attorney d’Oliveira said that he felt “compelled to do all [he] can to warn the public that we all need to remember to not text and drive.” He went on to say, “If our TV campaign prevents one accident it will be well worth the time and expense.”
Awareness of the dangers of texting while driving is important in light of statistics published by CTIA-The Wireless Association, a non-profit wireless agency advocacy group. CTIA reports an average of 191.3 billion text messages being sent every month, with an additional of 2.29 trillion minutes of mobile phone use each year.
Also brought to attention in the texting and driving debate are statistics available on Distraction.gov, the U.S. government website maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to data available there, drivers between ages 18 and 21 routinely exceeded their lane 4.36 times while attempting to send a text message. The same statistics seemed to hold true for older drivers as well. One study showed that drivers ages between ages 35 and 54 exceed their lane 2.96 times each time they tried to send a text message.
