In April 2012, the US Food and Drug Administration changed the labels of Propecia to warn that it may cause severe side effects. This change in the label happened 15 years after Propecia’s approval in 1997 for the treatment of hair loss. Propecia (finasteride) is a medication used to treat male pattern baldness and has been linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer as well as erectile dysfunction and decreased libido.
New FDA Warning About Propecia Sexual Side Effects
The new label includes warnings of libido disorders, erectile dysfunctions, and orgasm disorders that have persisted for months or even years after men have stopped taking Propecia. The newly revised label also includes a description of reported cases of male infertility, as well as incidences of poor semen quality. The label change was based on the FDA’s study of many case reports. In addition to the updates in the labels, there have been reports of other side effects in a large number of Propecia users, which include gynecomastia, genital shrinkage, penile fibrosis, body disfigurement, endocrine system failure, and even psychological trauma. Additionally, an increasing number of former Propecia users have also been diagnosed with prostate cancer, severe body disfigurement, and even rare male breast cancer.
FDA Studies Reports of Propecia Side Effects
Before changing the label, the FDA already studied several reports of sexual dysfunction that were submitted through the Adverse Events Reporting System between 1998 and 2011. The study stated that 3.8% of men had reported adverse sexual experiences after taking the drug. The adverse sexual side effects of Propecia can include loss of libido, reduced sperm quality, and infertility. Merck has long remained silent about the changes made to the label of the drug. Lawsuits have been filed alleging that the maker gave insufficient warnings on the serious health risks associated with the use of the drug.
Propecia Lawyer Panel Prepares Multidistrict Litigation
Lawyers representing clients around the country who were harmed by adverse side effects of the hair loss treatment Propecia have begun to form a panel for multi-district litigation. Because of the large number of men harmed by side effects of Propecia, lawyers from around the country have had to form a panel to make sure that litigation across the country remains uniform.
