Pradaxa Lawsuit – d’Oliveira & Associates
Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate mesylate) is an anticoagulant prescribed patients in order to prevent clotting among those patients with atrial fibrillation problems not caused by a heart valve problem. It works by blocking a certain substance, known as thrombin, in the blood. It is usually prescribed to be taken once a day to prevent clots after surgery and the dosage is based on a person’s medical condition, other medications, and a patient’s response to treatment. There have been reports of severe Pradaxa side effects.
In a 2012 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, a study was published which concluded that Pradaxa use increases the patients risks of a heart attack or similar heart related diseases by 33%. The study, which was conducted by doctors from the Cleveland Clinic, concluded that after examining over 30,000 patients from seven clinical trials. In response to this and the growing reports of heart attacks, Acute Coronary Syndrome, and a myriad of other harmful side effects, the FDA is once again conducting an investigation into whether the benefits of Pradaxa outweigh the increasing amount of risks. In fact, the editor of the Archives of Internal Medicine, Rita Redbery MD, states that this is not the first time a major warning for Pradaxa has been issued.
Pradaxa has also come under strict scrutiny abroad, too. In addition to both Japan and Australia issuing urgent safety warnings for its users, the European Medicines Agency has advised doctors to undergo more detailed evaluations of patients before prescribing the potentially harmful drug, The patient needs to inform the doctor as soon as any of the following side effects start to show:
- Abdominal discomfort
- Allergic reaction
- Bloody coughs or vomit
- Bloody stools
- Easy bruising
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Joint pain
- Pink or dark urine
