Plavix (Clopidogrel), is an anticoagulant drug used to prevent strokes and heart attacks in people who are at risks for those problems. The drug works as a blood-thinner, helping to prevent blood clots that may ultimately cause heart attacks or strokes. The drug is commonly prescribed for patients to take along with a low dosage aspirin therapy; which the manufacturer of Plavix, Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol-Myer Squibb, claims will be more effective than just aspirin therapy alone.
Since being approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997, Plavix has become the country’s 6th best-selling drug, with sales reaching up to $3.8 billion dollars. However, recent medical studies and ensuing lawsuits may lead to the conclusion that Plavix may not be worthy of such a prestigious accomplishment, as its serious risks may outweigh its potential benefit.
Medical Studies Warn of the Serious, Life-Threatening Risks Associated with the Use of Plavix.
Recent Studies continue to show that the side effects resulting from taking Plavix are often more severe than from just receiving aspirin therapy. In fact, The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) recently had to halt part of its stroke-prevention study because the combination of Plavix and aspirin was linked to increased rates of bleeding and death versus just aspirin alone. Similarly, a recent study published by the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that the combination of Plavix and aspirin nearly doubles the risk of death in patients with no history of heart disease, as well as increased the risks for moderate and severe bleeding.
Other studies have also concluded that, for individuals with ulcers or who have a history of gastrointestinal disorders, the risk of bleeding or recurrent ulcers becomes 12 times higher with Plavix compared to Aspirin. Additionally, for patients with high blood pressure or high levels of cholesterol, the risk of heart attack, stroke and serious bleeding is doubled.
The Serious Side Effects from the Use of Plavix Are:
- Heart Attack
- Gastrointestinal Bleeding
- Internal Bleeding
- Cerebral Hemorrhage
- Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP)
- Bone Marrow Damage
Please Speak With Your Doctor Before Discontinuing Use of Plavix or Any Other Prescription Medication.
