Defective Takata Airbags that have exploded after exposed to humid conditions

Automakers recalled a record 51.2 million vehicles in 2015. Federal safety regulators say the number of recalls went increased in 2015 due to their increased vigilance following certain high-profile auto defect issues, such as ignition and airbag defects. Officials say they have now become more proactive about recalling defective autos. Another disturbing announcement that came from officials was that there are still 45 million vehicles on the road that were subject to recall between 2013 and 2015 that have still not been repaired. Many of these unrepaired automobiles affected by the Takata airbag recall have the potential to create serious, and even fatal car accidents.

Unrepaired Vehicles on the Road

The steady surge in recalls in 2015 has led to millions of unrepaired vehicles on our roadways. Experts say the auto industry needs to better understand how to communicate with vehicle owners to help improve recall completion rates. Unrepaired recall issues are more common in older cars. The recall repair rate in 2013 to 2013 models is 73 percent. But, for 2003 to 2007 models it is just 44 percent. The size of the recall also seems to make a difference. In cases where a recall affected fewer than 10,000 vehicles, the completion rate was 67 percent, but in recalls that involved one million or more vehicles, the repair rate was only 49 percent.

A number of the unrepaired, recalled vehicles on our roadways involve those equipped with defective Takata airbags. These vehicles have been recalled because Takata airbags tend to spray metal shrapnel through the cabin when the airbags deploy forcefully. There have been 10 known fatalities due to this issue. There have also been a number of serious injuries where vehicle occupants who have been pierced by the shrapnel suffered wounds consistent with stabbing. Carfax also issued a report last year that the number of unrepaired recalls surged 10-fold from 2013 to 2015.
