Woman on phone with scam artist

Women who have suffered serious side effects as the result of taking birth control pills such as Yaz and Yasmin are being victimized yet again – this time by con artists claiming to be from a settlement center asking women to send money so they can receive their settlement funds back. Yaz attorneys are warning consumers not to fall for this scam. If someone asks you to send money for you to receive funds, that should raise a red flag immediately, experts say. Reloadable debit cards, especially the popular Green Dot cards (which are legitimate) seem to be the method to move money that these scammers are adopting. If you are part of the class of women eligible for compensation from a Yaz lawsuit, it is of great importance that you be careful who you give your information too regarding settlement funds.

How Does The Scam Work?

According to a Fox news report, former users of Yaz birth control pills are getting bogus phone calls offering thousands of dollars for those who have suffered complications. One woman, who received such a phone call, had been hospitalized for a month and a half after suffering Yaz complications. The person on the phone offered her $7,500 if she had suffered any type of side effect such as blood clots, pulmonary embolism or a heart attack, which are all genuine complications women have experienced after taking Yaz.

The caller promised the woman that she would be eligible for compensation “on the same day.” He also named specific dates the woman had been hospitalized and mentioned that he was a representative with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) working with Bank of America to refund victims. He said all the woman had to do was buy a Green Dot card “for security only.” The woman sent the caller $60 using the Green Dot card, but never got a cent back, let alone the $7,500 she was promised.

What Should I Look For?

There are indications that the scammers are possibly getting personal health information about the injured women, from public court filings. It is important to know that lawyers are currently pursuing compensation only for Yaz complications such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, heart attack and wrongful death cases stemming from Yaz complications. Other injuries are not likely to qualify for any settlement, therefore a lawyer most likely will not contact you regarding these types of injuries. While victims may be anxious to receive some sort of monetary compensation for everything they have endured, it is important to rely on a trustworthy source for such assistance. If you get a call that seems like it may be one of these scams, be sure to get the contact information of the person you are talking to, and give them none of your information until you are totally positive they are legitimate lawyers.
