What Is a Pinnacle Pelvic Floor Repair Kit?

The Pinnacle Pelvic Floor Repair Kit is a transvaginal mesh device manufactured and sold by Boston Scientific. Transvaginal mesh products are meant to treat Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). Both of these conditions are caused by the weakening of muscles around the vaginal wall and bladder and can lead to discomfort and bladder leaks. The FDA estimates that as many as 300,000 women per year receive surgical treatment for POP, and about 25% of those surgeries used transvaginal mesh. In turn, about 250,000 women get surgery to address SUI, and around 80% of those surgeries used transvaginal mesh.

The mesh itself is made out of monofilament polypropylene mesh and/or collagen. Although the manufacturer claims that the mesh products are safe, scientific studies have shown that the materials used to make them are incompatible with human tissue and trigger negative immune responses, such as inflammation, severe pain, and allergic reactions. The collagen in these mesh products has also been shown to be harsh on female pelvic tissue and often leads to severe infections and can also cause chronic pain. Boston Scientific obtained FDA approval for the Pinnacle kit under Section 510(k) of the Medical Device Amendment to the Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act. This is known as a “fast track” method and requires no formal review or testing of the device.

Why Are There Pinnacle Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuits?

Woman clutching abdomenThrough the years, many different brands of transvaginal mesh patches have been taken off the shelves due to defects that have caused a vast array of serious medical complications. Many patients who have been treated with these mesh products have experienced serious, life altering complications that can have long-term consequences. The claims filed against Boston Scientific in relation to the Pinnacle Pelvic Repair Kit are very similar.

Plaintiffs claim they suffered severe side effects and reactions after being treated with the mesh products, and many times had to undergo corrective surgery to fix the problem. Many women have been left with permanent injuries as a result. Lawsuits specifically claim that Boston Scientific knew that the Pinnacle System was likely to cause harm and continued to market the product as safe anyway. Due to the high number of claims filed, the cases have been consolidated as multidistrict litigation (MDL), which means the lawsuits will go through the litigation process as a group to save both time and money.
