Propecia Side Effects and Symptoms

Propecia is a male pattern baldness drug with serious side effects such as an increased risk of getting prostate cancer along with a number of sexual side effects such as erectile dysfunction, decreased libido and ejaculation problems. The drug gained FDA approval years ago to treat hair loss and now there are many lawsuits against the manufacturer, Merck, alleging the company failed to properly warn users of the drug’s potentially harmful side effects.

The sexual side effects that these men reported varied, but ranged from the following:

  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Low Libido
  • Orgasm Issues
  • Shrinking Genitals
  • Painful Genitals
  • Breast Enlargement
  • Breast Tenderness
  • Genitourinary

Men have reported a number of other side effects as well, including: male breast cancer, hypotension, depression, anxiety, and dizziness.

It is important for you to contact a personal injury attorney as soon as you discover injury resulting from use of the pharmaceutical drug Propecia. There are strict time limits in which you must file your claim. Even if you are unsure about filing a claim, you still should understand what options are available to you.

Do I have a Propecia Lawsuit?

Propecia LawsuitWhen a person first discovers they have been injured by a dangerous drug, their main question is whether they have a valid lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company. These individuals have numerous questions that they are looking for answers to. When injured by a pharmaceutical drug, there are many complex steps that need to be followed, and a number of elements that need to be proven.

The injured individual can choose among the following avenues to try and prove their case: that the drug did not have adequate warnings, the drug was defective in the condition upon which it entered the market, or that the drug taken by the individual somehow deviated from the product’s original design.

You also need to prove that your injury was in fact caused by your use of Propecia. For this, you need the opinion of a medical professional, generally the doctor who is treating you for the condition. Usually this doctor must agree that the condition was created or made worse by use of the medication.

Propecia and Prostate Cancer

On June 9, 2011, the FDA issued a press release warning that Propecia might seriously raise the risk of prostate cancer. The notice was based on the administration’s scrutiny of two studies – the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial and the Reduction by Dutasteride of Prostate Cancer Events (REDUCE) Trial – which showed that Propecia and other medications in the 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (5-ARI) class reduced the overall risk of prostate cancer, but amplified the chances of increasing tumors. Signs and symptoms of Propecia prostate cancer include:

  • Inability to urinate: having a hard time starting or stopping the urination; frequent urination, especially at night; weak stream of urine; urine flow that starts and stops; ache or burning during urination
  • Erectile Dysfunction: struggle reaching an erection
  • Bloody Bodily Fluids: blood in the urine or semen
  • Pain: repeated pain in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs

Alternative balding treatments may not be as effective as Propecia, but they may be much safer given the serious life-threatening complications that have been linked with the drug’s use. Alternatives may be herbal, natural, or just paying close attention to notice side effects or changes as soon as they occur.

Propecia Medical Studies

Researcher performing medical studies on Propecia and Propecia Side EffectsDespite the fact that clinical studies have proven the drug to be effective in the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), which is an enlarged prostate, and male pattern baldness, studies also surfaced showing severe sexual dysfunction in men, which continued even after they stopped taking the drug. For example, in a 24-month clinical study with 1215 men, 83% of the participants reported same or higher hair count than before, versus only 23% of the control group reporting no loss of hair.

On the other hand, studies done at Boston University School of Medicine have shown that patients taking Propecia for BPH have shown side effects common to the drug. However, while some of the less severe side effects may cease once they stop taking the drug, some patients may experience sexual side effects that are irreversible in nature.

The frequency of sexual side effects connected to the drug has been unclear, but some studies have reported it to be as high as 39% while the patients are taking the drug. Only half of these patients reported that their erectile dysfunction subsided when they stopped taking the drug. Studies have also shown a potential for increased risk of prostate cancer in men.

One doctor completed two studies of the drug; one of which was published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, revealing that 96% of the 54 young and previously healthy patients suffered sexual dysfunction for over a year after quitting the medication. The other study, published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, showed that nearly 44% of the 61 young, previously healthy patients reported suicidal thoughts, while 36% had symptoms of severe depression.

About Propecia’s Manufacturer

Propecia (brand name finasteride) was approved by the FDA in 1997. It was used to treat baldness and enlarged prostates in men. Before these lawsuits, sales were high due to the effectiveness of treatments. In 2008 however, dangerous side effects began to surface. Swedish Medical Products Agency warned the drug was linked to long-term sexual side effects that were potentially permanent.

Although extremely effective in treating hair loss, Merck claims on its website that less than 2% of men could suffer side effects, which was a gross misrepresentation. The company also misrepresented the drug by stating that sexual dysfunction would go away after ceasing drug use. For some patients however, the problems got worse after stopping the drug. More recently, in 2012, Propecia caused such severe depression that one 22-year-old male committed suicide after using the drug. Another 30-year-old man took the drug for five months and experienced sexual dysfunction side effects, which continued after stopping the drug, which the label did not warn him of.
