On May 20, 2011, The Food and Drug Administration of the United States advised parents and healthcare providers to cease feeding SimplyThick thickening agents to premature infants, and on June 5th, 2011, SimplyThick thickening agents manufactured in Georgia were recalled. The products manufactured in the Georgia plant have been distributed throughout the United States and Canada, and could be purchased through food service distributors, drug distributors, retail pharmacies, medical suppliers, and healthcare providers. To date, the Food and Drug Administration is aware of fifteen cases of illness and two infant deaths linked to SimplyThick thickening agents.
SimplyThick makes thickening gel products to help infants swallow breast milk or formula. Many infants who are born premature require thickening agents to be added to their formula or breast milk to swallow their food. The SimplyThick products affected by this recall may cause necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a life-threatening condition characterized by inflammation or death of the intestinal tissue inside the infant.
The FDA has advised parents and healthcare providers to stop giving SimplyThick brand thickening agents to infants born before 37 weeks gestation who are currently receiving hospital care or have been discharged from the hospital within the past 30 days pending the results of the FDA’s investigation.
STOP feeding SimplyThick products to your premature infant
Until the Food and Drug Administration’s investigation is completed, any infant who was born before 37 weeks gestation and is in hospital care or was recently discharged from the hospital should not be given ANY SimplyThick products.
Save the packaging from SimplyThick products to determine whether the product was affected by the recall.
At this time, only products manufactured at the Georgia plant have been recalled. These are the 15 g., 30 g., some 120 g., and some 240 g. pouches. The thickening agent is also produced in 64-ounce dispenser bottles. All products have a date stamped or embossed in the foil, and the recall affects products “Best if Used By:” June 26, 2010 through June 26, 2012. The date format is: MMDDYY, so anything manufactured by the Georgia plant between “062610” and “062612” is affected by the recall.
