Un/Underinsured Motorist Coverage - d'Oliveira & Associates

underinsured motoristAn uninsured driver is a driver who operates a vehicle without insurance coverage. An underinsured driver is one whose insurance coverage is insufficient to compensate you for the injuries from an accident.

In the State of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, all insurance policies are required to provide uninsured motorist coverage. This is to protect the insured driver if they are struck by another driver who does not have insurance. When an uninsured driver injures you, you can file a claim with your own insurance company to be compensated for your injuries.

Some insurance policies also includes underinsured motorist coverage. This would come into play if you were hurt by a driver whose insurance is insufficient to compensate you for your injuries. If you have underinsured coverage, it may be available to “fill the gap” between the negligent driver’s coverage and your damages.

Because uninsured and underinsured insurance claims can be complicated, and policy limits vary by state, it is important to consult with a knowledgeable attorney about your automobile accident. Insurance companies often try to dispute uninsured or underinsured motorist claims so that they don’t have to pay for your injuries. If an uninsured or underinsured motorist injured you, tell the insurance company that you mean business. Call the law offices of d’Oliveira & Associates, P.C.
