Dangerous Songs To Listen To While Driving

A recent study looked at 20 drivers in 60 different driving simulation tests to see what type of music caused more aggressive driving behavior. The study took into account the type of music played, how often and how fast lanes were switched, and the mental work-load of the drivers, among other factors. If you were injured in a car accident due to a distracted driver, you may want to contact a Johnston car accident lawyer to find out if you have a case.

What Did the Results Show?

Dangerous Songs To Listen To While DrivingIn nearly every instance, while rock music was playing, drivers switched lanes more often and had increased heart rates. In every case, drivers increased their speed while listening to rock music. The main reason that rock music causes such driving behavior is due to the beats per minute (BPM) that is typical of this genre of music. One source states the average BPM in rock music is between 110-140 BPM’s, with deviations in either directions. Generally, any song that exceeds 120 BPM tends to bring about more aggressive driving.

While it is virtually impossible to test every song ever made, the biggest culprits within the study all had high tempos, which means a high BPM rate. The most dangerous in the study was clocked at having 189 BPM, well above the accepted threshold. Here were the top 5 songs listed under the study:

  1. American Idiot – Green Day
  2. Party in the U.S.A. – Miley Cyrus
  3. Mr. Brightside – The Killers
  4. Don’t Let Me Down – The Chainsmokers
  5. Born to Run – Bruce Springsteen

Despite the statistics saying how much rock music contributes to aggressive driving, some rock songs made it to the top 5 safest songs list. According to the songs tested in the study, here were the safest songs to listen to while driving, some clocking in as low as 80 BPM:

  1. Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin
  2. Under the Bridge – Red Hot Chili Peppers
  3. God’s Plan – Drake
  4. Africa – Toto
  5. Location – Khalid
