Why Is There a Youth Epidemic With Vaping?

Before the introduction of e-cigarettes, the number of young people who smoked was on a steep decline. With so many anti-smoking ads and advocates voicing the dangers of smoking, it appeared as though cigarettes would be a thing of the past. Then, a new contender entered ring in the form of e-cigarettes.

According to a national survey, the number of high school seniors who used e-cigarettes increased over 25% between the years of 2010 to 2018. This startling increase is reinforced by the fact that Juul Labs marketed to minors. A warning letter from the FDA to Juul Labs recounts how representatives of Juul went to high schools and told students how much safer their product was in comparison to combustible cigarettes. With a whole new generation becoming addicted to nicotine, Juul E-Cigarette Lawyers are now beginning filing Juul E-Cigarette lawsuits for deceptive marketing towards minors.

Why Are Juul E-Cigarettes Dangerous?

This product contains nicotine, which is an extremely addictive chemical. Each Juul cartridge contains 5% nicotine. Each cartridge also has about 200 puffs before the user would need to replace it. This is the equivalent of an entire pack of combustible cigarettes. The major reason why youth vapers are at an increased risk is because their brains are still in development until the age of 25. Therefore, damages to the developing brain by way of nicotine addiction can be permanent. According to the Centers of Disease Control (CDC), vaping related illnesses have grown frighteningly fast in the past months, leading to serious injuries.

What Are The Injuries From E-Cigarettes?

The vaping epidemic continues as now over 1,400 cases of deadly illnesses linked to vaping products and 33 deaths were reported to the CDC as of October 17, 2019. The CDC is even more concerned by the fact that the number of victims is increasing rather than decreasing. This may indicate that even more people will fall ill before finding the cause or cure of vaping related illnesses.

The CDC is calling this illness EVALI (e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury). This illness mostly impacts and targets the lungs. It appears the patients have lung diseases that tend to be more common in older patients. However, many of these patients exhibiting these symptoms are quite young, since the vaping trend is popular with young individuals. The initial symptoms in nearly all EVALI cases involve coughing, chest pain and shortness of breath. EVALI cases that require intensive care prove to be fatal, or potentially fatal, 50% of the time. It is also suspected that during flu season that the outbreak of this illness will increase.

How Is The Nation Reacting?

Local governments are weighing in with big legislative decisions in light of the vaping epidemic. San Francisco became the first city to ban the sale of all electronic cigarettes. This ban does not go into effect until early 2020. New York, Rhode Island, Washington and Oregon have all banned the sale of flavored vaping products for 4-6 months, depending on the state. However, Michigan and Oregon have lifted these bans temporarily in recent court decisions. Massachusetts took the bans a step further and banned the sale of all vaping products for 4 months.

On the federal level, the Trump Administration is considering its own ban of flavored vaping products to combat the wave of young people using them. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) intends to finalize a policy that would effectively remove many nontobacco flavored e-cigarettes from the market.

Congress has also held public hearings about vaping to gain more knowledge on the matter. At these hearing, parents voiced their concerns at the alarming rate their children became addicted to vaping products and how deceptive the advertising is. One representative pointed out that the concern goes beyond THC based products. He mentions seeing patients with illnesses from only smoking tobacco-based vaping products. The chief medical officer of the American Lung Association spoke on how the FDA has found no e-cigarettes to be safe and effective in helping smokers quit.

What Are The Harmful Ingredients In E-Cigarettes?

The main appeal of e-cigarettes is that they are allegedly less harmful than combustible cigarettes. However, the FDA recently published a report on the testing of 18 samples of different flavorings and strengths of e-cigarette liquid. The report findings include:

  • One (1) sample contained diethylene glycol, which is an ingredient in antifreeze that is toxic to humans.
  • Half of the samples detected levels of tobacco-specific nitrosamines that are carcinogenic to humans.
  • Most samples contain “anabasine, myosmine, and β – nitrotyine” which are tobacco-specific impurities that are dangerous to humans.
  • All but one (1) of the cartridges labeled as “no nicotine” actually had low levels of nicotine.
  • Three (3) e-cigarette brand cartridges with the same label were tested and revealed that each cartridge emitted a markedly different amount of nicotine with each puff.
  • One (1) high-nicotine e-cigarette brand cartridge delivered twice the amount of nicotine compared to a sample of FDA approved nicotine inhalation for smoking cessation aids.
