Rob Kardashian was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious complication of diabetes, which occurs when an individual’s body produces high levels of blood acids or ketones. Diabetic ketoacidosis, is something we do not often hear about in the news, but the condition affects many people, including celebrities. Many do not even know that they are diabetic. For those who are, the condition could be caused by the very medications used to treat their diabetes such as Invokana (canagliflozin).

What Is Diabetic Ketoacidosis?

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a complication of diabetes that could occur if the body starts to run out of insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. If there is a lack of insulin, or if it cannot be used properly, the body will break down fat instead. This releases acids called ketones in the body. A combination of high ketone and blood sugar levels leads to ketoacidosis, which could prove deadly.

What Causes Diabetic Ketoacidosis?

Some causes of ketoacidosis include an underlying infection, misses insulin treatment or previously undiagnosed diabetes. However, it could also be caused in patients with Type 2 diabetes by a new class of medications known as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. Examples of brands of drugs that are out there under this category include Invokana, Invokamet and Jardiance.

What Are the Symptoms?

The signs and symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis often develop quickly, sometimes within 24 hours. If you are taking Invokana or other SGLT2 inhibitors to treat diabetes and are experiencing any symptoms of ketoacidosis, see your doctor right away. Some of the symptoms include:
