Premature Infant Formula Manufacturers Failed To Warn About The Increased Risks of Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) With Cow Milk-Based Products

To date, several lawsuits have been filed against baby formula makers claiming these companies knowingly sold to the public cow milk-based baby formulas. These lawsuits are targeted mainly towards the baby formulas Similac and Enfamil.

New Research Shows Infant Formula Is Linked To Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)

According to new research, there is a connection between cow milk-based baby formulas and NEC development in premature babies. Cow milk-based baby formulas can cause infection in an infant’s gut. An infection can lead to several side effects, such as bloating the intestinal wall, creating pain and possibly death.

What Are The Brands Held Responsible For Causing (NEC)?

There are several baby formulas linked to causing NEC. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Similac Special Care
  • Similac Special Care High Protein
  • Similac Human Milk Fortifier
  • Similac Neosure
  • Similac Alimentum
  • Enfamil NeuroPro Enfacare
  • Enfamil Human Milk Fortifier
  • Enfamil Premature 20 Cal
  • Enfamil Premature 24 Cal
  • Enfacare Powder
  • Enfamil Premature 24 Cal/fl oz HP
  • Enfamil Premature 30 Cal

Which Companies Manufacture Similac and Enfamil Baby Formulas?

Enfamil is manufactured and produced by Mead Johnson. Similac is manufactured and produced by Abbott Laboratories. There has not been a total recall of these formulas or other formulas implicated in the cow milk-based formulas lawsuits. However, as a result of the lawsuits, some establishments, have stopped selling the formulas in question. To date, the makers of Similac and Enfamil have not legally had to stop selling their formulas.

A Premature Infants Gastrointestinal System is not Equipped to Safely Digest the Bacteria Found in Cow’s Milk

The gastrointestinal system of a premature infant cannot safely or adequately digest the bacteria found in cow’s milk. Therefore, when a premature infant digests cow’s milk, the infant can develop NEC. However, research has shown that when infants ingest human breast milk instead, it is easier for them to digest and has less chance of causing intestinal issues.

What Is (NEC) Necrotizing Enterocolitis?

NEC is a serious and potentially fatal disease. When bacteria enters an infant’s intestinal wall, it can cause pain, inflammation and an infection. In turn, this can cause complete deterioration of the infant’s bowel. Below is a video that illustrates NEC and how it occurs.

Video Information on (NEC)

Who Does NEC Affect?

NEC occurs mainly in premature infants.

What are the Signs and Symptoms Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis?

Signs and symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Belly becomes extended
  • Abdominal distention
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeding intolerance
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal swelling and pain
  • Bloody stool
  • Trouble breathing
  • Decreased bowel sounds
  • Lack of weight gain
  • Refusing to eat

What To Do if Your Premature Baby Developed Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) After Being Fed Similac or Enfamil

If your premature child has ingested an unsafe baby formula, you may be eligible for an NEC baby formula lawsuit. The circumstances in your case will determine whether you qualify.

How Do You Treat NEC?

If your infant has NEC, there are two treatment methods: surgery or medical treatment. Some medical treatments include halting feeding, antibiotics, blood tests and checking stool. Although medical treatment tends to work on many infants, the infant may need surgery. Surgery is necessary when the infant’s intestine becomes pierced.

Oligosaccharides is an Important Prebiotic Found in Human Milk

Oligosaccharides act as a prebiotic to help feed the good bacteria to an infant’s gut. Good bacteria is essential to keeping your infant healthy and promoting growth. Oligosaccharides are in many foods, such as wheat, onions and wheat. However, there are some downsides to oligosaccharides. Since our bodies have difficulty breaking down carbohydrates like oligosaccharides, this can disrupt the stomach and cause digestive issues.

Why use Bovine Milk-Based Formulas at all in Premature Infants?

Oligosaccharides are in cow milk-based formulas. Oligosaccharides can benefit premature infants by improving their gut health. However, the benefits do not always outweigh the risks.
