Why Are There Onglyza Lawsuits?
Onglyza (saxagliptin) is a medication created by the manufacturers, Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca, to treat type 2 diabetes. Medical studies allege that the medication may increase the risk for heart failure and other medical conditions. Some patients are coming forward now claiming that they have suffered harmful side effects from taking Onglyza and that they were not adequately warned of the potential health risks. Hundreds of Onglyza lawsuits have been filed across the country alleging that the medication has caused harmful side effects.
What Are The Alleged Onglyza Side Effects?
- Heart Failure – This is the most concerning side effect. According to the American Heart Association, heart failure occurs when the heart muscle is weakened and cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s need for blood and oxygen. Signs of heart failure may include shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling, increased urination and nausea.
- Decreased Kidney Function – when the kidneys do not adequately filter waste products from the blood.
- Acute Pancreatitis – a sudden inflammation of the pancreas that lasts for a short period of time. The condition can be treated quickly or become a life threatening illness.
- Severe Joint Pain
Recent Medical Studies About Onglyza
One of the most significant studies completed is known as SAVOR that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in October 2013. This was a clinical trial conducted because the safety and effectiveness of Onglyza was unclear. Researchers conducted the study for the purpose of assessing if the medication caused negative side effects on the heart or stroke. They did so by giving Onglyza or a placebo to over 16,000 patients with type 2 diabetes. These patients had a history of, or were at risk for, heart disease and they were observed for approximately two years. The results of the SAVOR study concluded that there was not a significant increase of heart disease in patients using Onglyza. However, there were increases in hospitalization for heart failure. In an April 14, 2015 press release, the manufacturer commented on the results of the SAVOR study and said, “AstraZeneca will also conduct further investigation to better understand the signal of hospitalization for heart failure found in the SAVOR results.”
Is The Government Doing Anything About Onglyza?
As a result of the SAVOR study, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) organized a 15 member advisory committee to further investigate the possible risks Onglyza has on the heart. In a rare occurrence, the FDA committee requested clinical trial data from the manufacturers of Onglyza to reevaluate findings that linked the medication to heart failure. The FDA advisory committee concluded that the results of the SAVOR study demonstrated that the use of Onglyza with type 2 diabetes has an acceptable cardiovascular risk profile. However, 14 out of 15 committee members recommended changing the labeling on Onglyza to add new safety information that included the potential increased risk of heart failure, death, decreased kidney function and acute pancreatitis. The remaining committee member voted to take Onglyza off the market entirely.
Why Should You Speak With An Onglyza Lawyer?
Patients with diabetes should be fully warned about the risks of the medications that they take. This is especially true when the manufacturer has been informed by credible sources that their medication might be harmful. Manufacturers who do not fully warn and cause harm to consumers should be held accountable. We wish to speak to you if you suffered side effects from taking Onglyza and discuss your options under the law. It is important to talk to a lawyer as soon as possible regarding your potential Onglyza lawsuit. If you wait too long, you may limit your opportunity to recover for your injuries.
