DePuy ASR is a hip replacement that is created by DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson. The system obtained clearance from the FDA and first became available in the United States in 2005. The system was said to have been approved for sale without clinical trials. The DePuy ASR hip replacement system was recalled on August 24, 2010. Initially, DePuy Orthopaedics claimed that the recall was due to low sales. Later on, it was revealed that it was due to a number of complaints and studies that show the complications resulting from the hip replacement. Some studies of patients that used DePuy hip replaces show above average levels of chromium or cobalt in the blood, loose components of the implant, and necrosis or soft tissue damage as among the complications resulting from a failed DePuy hip replacement.
Here are the ways in which the DePuy ASR Hip Replacement has failed or can fail
- Components in the implant may loosen
- Above average level of chromium/cobalt in the blood caused by the wear and defect of the implant
- Necrosis or soft tissue damage caused by exposure to metal particles from wear of the implant
The symptoms resulting from failure of the hip replacement include:
- Fluid collections and cystic masses around the joint
- Severe pain in the implant area
- Loosening and lysis/osteolysis
- Problems involving walking, pain, swelling or discomfort in the hip area
- Fracture (breaking of bone around the implant)
