DePuy hip implants were first approved by the Food and Drug Administration and introduced to the market in 2005. The device was approved using the less thorough 510(k) approval process, which allows for minimal clinical testing if the manufacturer will be able to prove that the object is substantially similar to another product in the market. Other forms of divice and drug approval are much more demanding than the process that DePuy opted to under go – a process that can be used to speed a product to market.

DePuy Hip Replacement Recall

The FDA ordered the recall of DePuy ASR hip replacements when they received numerous reports regarding the defects of the device. Most of the injuries required another surgery, called revision surgery, to remove the device. Studies and research point to the serious problems or complications for patients who receive metal on metal hip replacements. DePuy hip replacements may result in bits of the metal getting embedded in the tissue when pieces of the metal splinter off. This can cause pain and difficulty when the patient walks or sits, loss of mobility, severe swelling, and joint inflammation. It may also cause even worse medical problems such as metal poisoning when the body absorbs the metal. Toxic levels of cobalt from the implant may give rise to cobalt poisoning. Extreme cases may lead to loss of bone, permanent disability, and sometimes, even death from metal poisoning.

The breakdown of these implants can be painful. The pain may place the patient into the same – or even worse – condition they were in before getting the replacement. This loss of newfound independence may be just as disappointing as the revision surgery is painful. It is possible that this pain and the breakdown of these implants can be traced to the shortcut used by DePuy to bring them to market without thorough and rigorous studies.
