While Xarelto is the top-selling blood thinner in the United States, it appears that Eliquis might be closing in as it is increasingly becoming apparent that Eliquis is safer and more effective than Xarelto. Eliquis, a blood thinner developed by Bristol Myer Squibb and Pfizer, has demonstrated in several studies, quite convincingly that it is superior in efficacy and bleeding profile to standard warfarin therapy as well as Xarelto. With many Xarelto lawsuits already pending, this may be a good alternative to patients in need of this type of medication.
In a recent French study, among patients with atrial fibrillation, Eliquis (apixaban) bested warfarin in preventing strokes while also reducing the risk of bleeding by 31 percent. Eliquis also cut the risk of death from any cause by 11 percent, making it the first of a new crop of anticoagulants to significantly move the needle on mortality. These numbers make a compelling case for Eliquis compared to other blood thinners in the market including Pradaxa, and Xarelto.
What Gives Eliquis the Leg Up?
During the recent Vascular Interventional Advances (VIVA) annual conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, medical professionals stated that Eliquis appeared safer and more convenient than Xarelto. Doctors and experts who spoke at the conference said Eliquis had a number of advantages over Xarelto. Unlike Xarelto, Eliquis can be administered with or without food so patients don’t have to plan their medication around a meal.
Also, Eliquis does not present kidney damage risks or the danger of liver injury as Xarelto does. As for gastrointestinal bleeding, Eliquis is the winner there too compared to Xarelto and Pradaxa. Additionally, a comparative effectiveness study found the risk of any bleeding and major bleeding noticeably higher in Xarelto compared to Eliquis.
What Are The Alleged Xarelto Side Effects?
Xarelto is notorious for serious or even potentially fatal side effects. The most dangerous of these is internal bleeding that can prove fatal for patients. A number of patients who have suffered internal bleeding as a result of taking Xarelto have filed lawsuits against drug manufacturer Bayer claiming that it failed to warn them about the serious risks presented by the blood thinner. Both Bayer and Johnson & Johnson advertise that Xarelto is safe and more convenient than Warfarin, which requires that patients go in to their doctors’ offices to be monitored. However, we now know that there are safer and more effective alternatives to Xarelto.
Moreover, a number of studies have shown that Xarelto is not more efficient or safer than Warfarin. In fact, German regulators reported that the number of deaths attributed to Xarelto increased in 2013 compared to the previous year. The FDA also received a number of adverse event reports and nearly half of these reports said patients suffered blood clots as a result of taking Xarelto. The drug is also dangerous because, unlike other blood thinners, there is no antidote to stop the bleeding. This means that if patients suffer internal bleeding, it is not possible to reverse it or stop the bleeding.
