When you hear about facial injuries as they relate to car accidents most think about cosmetic injuries. Lacerations that require stitches tend to leave scars. To treat the scars it may take cosmetic surgery and some think that as medically not necessary. Unfortunately, injuries to the face can be much more serious than lacerations leaving scars.

A broken bone to the face can cause some painful and distressing side effects. Some of the more common broken bones to the face are the nose, cheek and jaw bones. Breaking these bones can cause problems with sight, speech, ability to speak, ability to swallow and can also cause excruciating pain. Because facial injuries affect the part of the body associated with sight, speech, breathing and traumatic brain injuries, these injuries need to be taken seriously.

Treatment for lacerations usually requires sutures or stitches. These need to be very carefully performed for cosmetic reasons. Broken bones need to be treated the same way any other broken bone is treated. It will need to be "set" so that the bone will heal properly.

As with any injury, whether it is the result of an auto accident, a fall or a sports injury it is very important to have these injuries addressed and treated by a medical professional.

Facial injuries occur from airbag deployment or from not wearing a seatbelt on some occasions. The force of the airbag can cause a broken nose and/or broken jaw. Not wearing a seatbelt causes the body to be thrown around the compartment of a car during a car accident. Sticking the dashboard can cause devastating injuries. As a personal injury attorney, I have seen car accident victims with broken jaws that have been wired shut during the healing process. Not only is this painful, but you will be on a liquid diet for many weeks.

Those with scaring are very self-conscious and these types of injuries may be the most devastating injuries due to the psychological pain. As with any car accident injury, immediate treatment will allow you to get the best possible result.
