Stryker Hip Lawsuit

A Louisiana woman by the name of Joann Alcorn has filed a lawsuit against Stryker Orthopedics after experiencing serious and painful complications that have been linked to procedures involving Stryker hip replacement devices. Originally filed in state court in Louisiana and later removed to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, the suit attempts to hold Stryker responsible for more than $75,000 in damages. (Case No. 2:2012cv01635)

Stryker Hip Case Removed to Federal Court

After undergoing a total hip replacement in 2002 in which a Stryker hip replacement system was implanted, the plaintiff claims that she began to experience severe hip pain, loss of range of motion in the hip, and difficulty walking. The plaintiff was eventually confined to a wheelchair due to these complications.

Hip Surgery

Stryker recalled two of its hip replacement systems, the Rejuvenate and ABG II. Both systems are metal-on-metal devices. The design of these devices can cause the shedding of tiny shards of metal into joints and surrounding tissues causing metal poisoning. The plaintiff in this case, however, was fitted with Stryker’s Trident Acetabular system. This ceramic device was also recalled because it was found to cause squeaky joints, bone fractures, and other complications that forced patients to require premature revision surgery. The plaintiff claims that she has been forced to undergo two of these revision surgeries as a result of the devices use, neither of which successfully fixed the problem.

Attorney Paul d’Oliveira stated “We hope her attorney in Louisiana gets this woman the justice she deserves as it appears she has a good. Unfortunately there are too many of these types of cases out there and the civil justice system is the only remedy these people have. Unfortunately, insurance companies and other big corporations are putting out negative propaganda about there being too many lawsuits today and that this is the cause of a lot of our problems in this country. My feeling is that some greedy people on Wall Street are the ones who have put this country into the worst recession since World War II. Hopefully, our voters will make better decisions come November and vote for politicians who stand up to these corporations.”
