In a new Xarelto case against Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary, Janssen and Bayer are defending claims that their failure to warn of bleeding risks caused a patient’s death. Attorneys for the patient’s family claim that Janssen and Bayer put profits over the patient’s health and their death was completely avoidable. Attorneys also said the drug makers concealed information that should have been on Xarelto’s label. Attorneys for the drug makers told jurors in New Orleans that “bad things can happen to good people.” There are currently more than 18,000 patients claiming that Xarelto’s bleeding risks caused death and serious injury. If you are one of these people, be sure to contact an experienced Xarelto lawyer to assist you.
What Is Xarelto?
Xarelto is a prescription blood thinner created by Janssen Pharmaceuticals that was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011. This drug is an anticoagulant, which means it prevents blood from clotting. These types of drugs are often used to prevent or treat deep vein thrombosis, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary embolism, stroke and other conditions. While Xarelto is widely prescribed, it has several side effects, the most dangerous of which is internal bleeding, which can be fatal. It is popular because it does not require patients to get repeated blood tests to determine dosage, like other blood-thinning drugs, such as warfarin.
What Makes Xarelto Dangerous?
Xarelto is more dangerous than other blood thinners because it does not have an antidote or reversal agent. On the other hand, when it comes to warfarin, one of the oldest blood thinners that may also cause bleeding, vitamin K serves as an antidote to stop the bleeding. There are also a few other options to stop the bleeding with warfarin. When patients take Xarelto, even a minor injury could potentially prove life threatening because there is no way to stop the bleeding. It can take as long as 24 hours to flush the drug out of the system. Elderly adults, who have a more difficult time flushing the drug, face an even higher risk of fatal bleeding.
