Raynham, Massachusetts Area Attractions

Raynham has a rich history and takes pride in its agricultural roots. A handful of founding families and their descendants held prominent positions in the town until well into the 20th Century, according to the Raynham Historical Society. Raynham which was incorporated as a town in 1731, is located about 32 miles south of Boston and 22 miles northeast of Providence, Rhode Island.

The iron works were the dominant industry in the town for nearly two centuries. The iron works in Raynham have the distinction of being the iron “manufactory” that was continuously operational for the longest period. In addition to the iron works, shipbuilding was also part of Raynham’s early economy. Despite these small industries, Raynham was still very much a farming community known for its strawberries, peaches and wide variety of apples. Today, most of the town’s farmland has been developed for housing and business. However, it still retains some characteristics of its rural beginnings.
