What Is Tasigna?
Tasigna is a new oral treatment for patients who have been diagnosed with the Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+CML), a rare cancer affecting both the blood and bone marrow. Tasigna was created by a company known as Novartis, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, and has been readily available for purchase in the United States since 2007.
What Is Dangerous About Tasigna?
Although not placed upon the label of Tasigna, the major danger associated with Tasigna is atherosclerosis, a potentially-fatal disease known to narrow the heart’s arteries. The narrowing happens when the heart’s arteries become overwhelmed with plaque, creating a rigid, thick coating on the inside of the arteries. This disease can lead to eventual extremity amputations, cardiovascular issues, heart attacks, or even death.
What Side Effects Are Linked To Tasigna?
- Heart attack
- Coronary heart disease
- Chest pain
- Carotid artery disease
- Peripheral artery disease
- Chronic kidney disease
- Gangrene (tissue death)
- Limb amputation
Has There Been A Tasigna Class Action Suit Created?
At this time, there is not a Tasigna class action suit. However, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed in California in March 2016. This lawsuit alleges that Novartis was made aware of several reports showing that the drug caused atherosclerosis. This lawsuit could very easily open the doors to floods of litigation, based on the amount of patients who have suffered these negative consequences.
Beyond the normal bad drug lawsuits that have been filed, Novartis came to an agreement with the United States government pertaining to an illegal kickback scheme. This costed the company an estimated $390 million to fully payback the settlement.
Has The FDA Taken Action In Regards To These Tasigna Complaints?
There has not been any official action taken by the FDA. This includes any possible recalls. However, Health Canada issued a safety alert for the general public and health care professionals of Canada regarding the possible risk of developing atherosclerosis-related conditions with the use of Tasigna.
Have There Been Any Medical Studies Regarding Tasigna?
- April 2011: In an article published in the journal Blood, researchers suggest that the clinical outcomes of thirty-four patients receiving Tasigna indicate an increased percentage of patients suffering from arterial occlusive disease compared with matched control groups.
- April 2013: In an article published in the American Journal of Hematology, researchers note that three patients developed rapidly peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) during treatment, and were required to have repeated angioplasty and/or multiple surgeries.
- May 2013: According to the American Journal of Hematology, researchers describe the rapid progression of intra- and extra-cranial atherosclerosis that led to a stroke in a patient with previously reported Tasigna-related peripheral arterial disease.
