For instance, physician, American Revolution general and Rhode Island Supreme Court Justice Dr. Joshua Babcock was born in Westerly. According to the 2010 census, the town has a population of approximately 22,787 residents.

Westerly is a town on the southwestern shoreline of Washington County, Rhode Island. It is a picturesque beachfront community dotted with lakes and ponds. Westerly is one of Rhode Island’s major tourist attractions in the summer when its population nearly doubles. The Pawcatuck River, known for its own species of Westerly salmon, flows in the Western border of the city emptying into Little Narragansett Bay. Along the coast of Westerly, you’ll find salt ponds that serve as shallow reef-like pools. The outer walls of these pools form the long white beaches for which this town has become famous.
The town has a freshwater lake, Chapman’s Pond, which is currently undergoing revitalization. The area is also well-known for a type of granite (Westerly granite), which has been used in a number of government buildings in several states along the eastern seaboard. Westerly is of course most famous for its various beaches such as Westerly Town Beach, Misquamicut State Beach, East Beach and Weekapaug Beach.

Downtown Westerly: Westerly is one of the quaintest towns you’ll find in Rhode Island. Its architecture is unique with its town hall made of granite from local quarries. You’ll see the Westerly Public Library, which was opened in 1894 in honor of Civil War veterans. This building is constructed with red and yellow brick and built like an armory. Even the post office is a Greek Revival building from the 1900s. Christ Church is right next to town hall near Wilcox Park. During the summer concert, the church bells provide the background for the 1812 overture. On Elm Street you’ll find a number of old, white Victorian mansions, which are the hallmark of New England towns.
Go Fishing: There are a lot of great places to go fishing in Westerly including Misquamicut where you’ll have five miles of beach from which to fish. Watch Hill also has some really good spots for fishing. The beaches in Weekapaug produce some of the biggest Bass in the area.
Block Island: If you are in the mood for a picturesque journey, get on a ferry and head to Block Island. This island has 17 miles of beaches where you can swim, kayak, snorkel or fish.
Misquamicut State Beach: This is a perfect place to spend a summer day. The beach is about a mile and a half long with clean, clear water and excellent amenities such as showers, changing rooms and concession stands.
Watch Hill Lighthouse: This is a historic landmark, which is just a short walk from the village of Watch Hill. The lighthouse is home to a museum, which has photographs, letters and journals that give visitors a glimpse into history.
Flying in a Historic Warbird: Westerly Airport is home to two TA-6 aircraft from World War II and you can actually fly around the local area in one of them. It is about a half-hour flight during which you can catch breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Maybe you’ll even get to operate the controls on a real warbird.
Westerly Town Park: This park has been called a “botanical wonder” with more than 40 varieties of tress. Each summer, there is a concert here with local composer George Kent, which culminates in a spectacular fireworks display.
Mystic Aquarium: This place has sharks, a live sea lion show and the only beluga whales you’ll see in New England.
Foxwoods Resort Casino: This is the largest resort casino in the United States featuring live shows, dance clubs, a spa, golf course, shops and dining options.
Day at the Zoo: You can take a day trip to Providence where you can spend a day at the Roger Williams Park Zoo.
