Types of Diabetes

  • Type 1 Diabetes: Generally, this form of diabetes is diagnosed in children and young adults and was previously considered to be juvenile diabetes. People with Type 1 diabetes have bodies that do not produce any insulin. Insulin is what the body produces to process the sugar that we eat.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: This is the most common type of diabetes and it is diagnosed at all ages. It is a disease where either the body does not produce enough insulin or the body is ignoring the insulin and not processing the sugar properly. When insulin does not break down the sugar properly, it is impossible for the body to convert the sugar to energy and the sugar builds up in the blood making the person very sick.
  • Gestational Diabetes: A form of diabetes that is diagnosed during pregnancy around the 24th week. This is a form of diabetes where the hormones that are created during pregnancy block the insulin from breaking down the sugar in the body. This form is generally mild, non-life threatening and the blood sugar returns to normal after the baby is born.
