Victoza is an FDA-approved prescription medication that helps lower blood sugar (glucose) levels in adults with Type-2 diabetes. It is manufactured by Novo Nordisk, and has been approved by the Food & Drug Administration. It functions by mimicking the “Glucagon-like-Peptide-1” (GLP-1) hormone which promotes the production of insulin when a patients blood-sugar is low. This drug is recommended with diet, exercise and other diabetes medicines. It is not recommended as a first choice of therapy for treating diabetes.

Victoza Side Effects

Like any drug, Victoza has potential side effects. The most common of which include nausea, headache, decreased appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, upper respiratory tract infection (or common cold) and certain immune system-related reactions like hives, itching, unexplained rashes and swelling of the mouth or throat. Other side effects include anxiety, blurred vision, back pain, confusion, cough, difficulty concentrating or speaking, dizziness, fatigue, flu, hunger, increased heart rate, irritability, nervousness, sweating, trembling, and urinary tract infection.

Proposed Victoza Recall

However, a consumer advocacy group called Public Citizen petitioned The U.S. Food and Drug Administration this past April to take Victoza off the market completely. The group claimed that the drug’s carcinogenetic side-effects led to an increased risk of its users developing pancreatic cancer or pancreatitis. Specifically, the group’s study shows that over a 17 month period, more than 200 persons on Victoza developed acute pancreatitis while estimating that over 2000 people suffered severe and painful side effects; the Victoza created four times the risk of developing Pancreatitis than similar medications; and, most alarmingly, that the survival rate for those patients whose pancreatic cancer has spread after five years of using Victoza is 1.8%.

Victoza Medical Studies

fda-testingOther studies have shown that the medication was found to have caused a type of thyroid tumor in rats and mice. It is still not known whether the medication can cause tumors in humans. Some studies also show that Victoza may cause dangerously low glucose levels (hypoglycemia), especially when used with other medications. The serious side effects of Victoza may lead to organ failure, disability, and sometimes, even death.
