What Is NuVasive MAGEC?
The NuVasive MAGEC System is a new form of “rod-based” treatment for scoliosis in young children. The system is comprised of two titanium, adjustable rods and an external remote controller. The growing rods are surgically placed, one on each side of the spine, and work to help straighten out the curvature of the spine as the child grows. They are gradually adjusted to meet the height requirements and continue to provide support to the spine.
Traditional rod-based scoliosis treatment generally requires surgery every six months to adjust the rods. However, the MAGEC system utilizes a new magnetic technology that allows the rods to be adjusted remotely with the use of an external remote controller. The remote controller is applied to the child’s back and magnetically manipulates the rods to lengthen them internally. In this way, the rods are adjusted regularly without the need for routine surgery. MAGEC has become an increasingly popular treatment option due to the claimed decreased need for surgery.
What Is Dangerous About the NuVasive MAGEC System?
The MAGEC System has not been on the market long, and since its FDA approval in 2017, has already caused a number of serious side effects. The adjustable growing rods are prone to breakage and corrosion, which can cause damage to surrounding tissue and even metal poisoning. There have also been reports that the rods do not always lengthen the way they are supposed to, which can lead to failure of the treatment and the need for invasive revision surgery. These issues have created concerns that the MAGEC System does not work the way it was intended to. Furthermore, the side effects negate the advertised benefits of the system, including avoiding the need for surgery.
What Side Effects Are Linked To NuVasive MAGEC?
The NuVasive rods have been found to bend and break causing severe damage to muscles and tissues. This issue requires surgery to take the rods out and implant new ones. There have also been instances where the system fails to lengthen or adjust correctly. This also requires surgery to fix. Another serious issue is corrosion of the rods. The MAGEC System has been found to corrode at a faster rate than expected. Corrosion of the rods causes metal to seep into surrounding tissue and into the blood stream, which can lead to metallosis (metal poisoning).
Common side effects that indicate a problem include the following:
- Severe back pain
- Stiffness in back muscles
- Abnormal bruising in back area
- Skin discoloration
- Difficulty walking
- Skin rashes
- Severe headaches
- Recurring infections
- Swelling and inflammation
Are There NuVasive Lawsuits?
While the issues with the MAGEC System are still relatively new, lawyers across the country are currently filing claims against NuVasive for injuries associated with faulty rods. If you or your child have been injured after being treated with a NuVasive MAGEC rod system, you may be able to file a claim and be compensated for things like medical bills, pain and suffering, and other losses.
What has the FDA Done?
NuVasive was granted FDA clearance for the MAGEC system in 2017 after utilizing the fast track 501(k) application process. This means that NuVasive was able to get the MAGEC System on the market with little to no clinical testing because there were similar products already in use. Since that time, a larger than expected number of issues and injuries have been reported in connection with the MAGEC rods. Several recent studies also confirm that the rods can cause serious issues and additional research is needed to establish they are actually safe and effective. It is unclear at this time whether the FDA will require a post market surveillance study or take additional action against NuVasive.
