result of a defective Takata Airbag Inflator

Ford and Honda are adding more than 1 million vehicles to the Takata airbag inflator recall. According to a news report in The Chicago Tribune, Honda is recalling about 772,000 additional Honda and Acura vehicles in the U.S. for defective front passenger seat airbag inflators manufactured by Takata Corporation. Ford is recalling more than 816,000 vehicles in North American. Faulty Takata airbag inflators have spurred massive, unprecedented, global recall of millions of vehicles, along with several Takata Airbag recall lawsuits.

What Is The Problem With Takata Airbag Inflators?

Takata’s airbag inflators contain the chemical ammonium nitrate, which is commonly found in fertilizers. The chemical is used to create a small explosion to inflate the airbags in the event of a car accident. However, the inflators in question tend to disintegrate sending sharp metal shrapnel into the vehicle compartment, which could cause severe injury or even death. So far, 16 people have been killed worldwide and about 180 have been injured as a result of these airbag defects. More than 100 million vehicles encompassing 17 automakers have been recalled. About 69 million vehicles have been recalled just in the United States.

Why Is This Dangerous to Consumers?

Consumer unaware of her defective Takata airbagIn this crisis of unprecedented proportions, consumers are the ones in danger. Replacement parts are still not available for the vehicles equipped with the defective airbags. So, there are millions of vehicles out there that still have these faulty airbags, posing a serious risk to drivers and passengers. A number of people who bought the vehicles used or in auctions tend not to know about the pending recalls. This lack of awareness creates an even greater danger for these used vehicle owners as they continue to drive and not make any attempts to get replacement airbags. If you are unsure about whether your vehicle is included in the recall, visit nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter the 17-digit vehicle identification number or VIN.

The Honda models recalled include the Acura MDX, Acura RL, Honda Accord, Civic, Fit and Insight. The recall also includes certain Acura TSX, TSX Wagon, Honda Crosstour, CR-V, Element, Pilot and Ridgeline. Among the recalled Ford vehicles are the Mustang, Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, MKZ, Ford Ranger, Edge and GT models. Ford has said it has not received reports of any injuries involving this batch of vehicles.
