Sometimes, the immune system attacks and tries to destroy an important part of the body. Autoimmune diseases can seriously disrupt the sufferer’s ability to maintain a normal life.

Autoimmune diseases are sometimes considered disabilities because they can make it almost impossible to work. These diseases can cause extreme pain or discomfort throughout the body or chronic sickness. A major factor that is taken into account by the Social Security Administration is whether or not a person can walk. Many of these conditions, like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, or Fibromyalgia, can interfere with a person’s ability to walk comfortably.

How Do You Qualify For Disability Benefits?

You qualify for disability benefits by proving that you have been unable to work for at least a year due to your disability. The Social Security Administration looks at all of your medical records and asks for the direct opinions of your doctors. Additionally, you need to have worked for at least 5 out of the last 10 years in a job where you paid taxes into Social Security.

Even if you have not worked for 5 of the last 10 years, you might still be able to qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) if your annual income is below a certain level. A disability lawyer will be able to tell you whether or not it is likely if you will qualify for disability benefits. Read more
