Are Hip Injuries Disabilities?
Due to the location of the hip and how frequently it is used throughout the day, injuries there can make it very difficult to work. Whether it was a workplace injury, a car accident or another type of accident, hip pain can be debilitating. Hip injuries can range in severity from mild discomfort or pain to severe and chronic pain. If the condition prevents you from working for at least a year, then it could qualify as a disability.
What Kinds Of Hip Injuries Are Disabilities?
- Hip Injury/Hip Pain: Generally the treatment for hip pain is rest, pain medicine and physical therapy before you can return to enjoying your regular life activities. Hip pain can affect your ability to walk normally and might require the use of a wheelchair or a cane.
- Failed Hip Replacement: Recent studies have shown that metal on metal joint replacements are more likely to fail before the normal fifteen year advertised life of the implant. Over time, the bone erodes near the implant site and leads to increased pain and discomfort. The metal ball is sometimes able to slip out of the socket causing the necessity of replacement. This failed hip replacement injury can be very painful, and limit a sufferer’s ability to walk.
- Fractured Pelvis: A fractured pelvis is painful and can take a long time to heal or may never heal completely. Fractured pelvises are generally caused by blunt force trauma or some form of wound to the area. People with osteoporosis are also more likely to suffer from pelvic fractures. Swelling, bruising and severe pain are often symptoms of pelvic fractures. These injuries can cause a person to walk with a limp and cause pain for several months to several years.
If you have suffered one of these or similar injuries, you could be eligible to receive SSD benefits.
How Do You Qualify For SSD Benefits?
You qualify for disability benefits by proving to the Social Security Administration that you have a recognized disability, which has kept or will keep you out of work for at least a year. Also, you need to meet certain other “work credit” requirements, which are earned by working in the years prior to suffering your hip injury. If you have a disability, but do not have the work credits, you may be eligible to receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Read more
