Are Skin Disorders Considered Disabilities?

Certain skin disorders, which keep a person from being able to work for at least a year, can be considered to be disabilities by the Social Security Administration. Disorders such as severe skin sensitivity, serious burns, or conditions that result in frequent flare-ups of lesions, can sometimes qualify an individual for SSDI.

What Are Common Skin Disorders For SSDI?

  • Ichthyosis – A genetic condition, which results in dry skin. Severe cases of ichthyosis can result in painful and extensive skin lesions. If these persist for at least 3 months even though they have been medically treated, it could be considered a disabling condition.
  • Bullous Disease – A disease that causes blisters over half an inch in diameter, which are often very painful. These are usually a product of an autoimmune disorder, and they can leave extensive scarring, even with treatment.
  • Chronic Infections – Serious infections, which cause necrosis (death of skin tissue) or fungation (when an ulcer underneath the skin breaks through the skin itself), can be considered a disability. It is very difficult, and often dangerous, to work with such conditions.
Skin Rash
  • Dermatitis – Severe dermatitis can cause blisters and severe itchy rashes that result in lesions. If such lesions persist for at least 3 months, dermatitis can be considered a disability for SSDI.
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa – A common, although usually not serious, genetic condition that causes abscesses underneath the skin. Severe and untreated cases can lead to cancers in various parts of the body, as well as serious bodily infections like sepsis.
  • Photosensitivity Disorders – Extreme photosensitivity disorders, such as Xeroderma pigmentosum, make it so that you cannot be exposed to sunlight and have to live a substantially separate life. This makes it very difficult to work at most jobs.
  • Burns – Burns that are caused by electricity, chemicals, or fire affect not just skin, but other systems of the body as well, which means that burns are often viewed together with other potentially disabling conditions. Severe burns that require extensive surgical treatment lasting for at least a year can be considered to be disabling.
