What Is Viagra?

erectile dysfunction or impotence treatment Viagra and its side effects which are at the center of Viagra LawsuitsViagra (sildenafil) is a medication that is primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence in men. Originally approved by the FDA in 1998, this drug works by relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow throughout the body. It is regularly used as a standard form of treatment for ED in all settings.

Other than being used to treat ED, the drug is also an effective treatment for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). Because this drug relaxes muscles in the body, it will reduce the workload of the ventricles of the heart, which will improve symptoms related to PAH or heart failure. Are There Viagra Lawsuits Being Filed?

Viagra lawyers are accepting cases for people who took the drug and later developed melanoma. These cases rely on several medical studies, which allege that there is a strong connection between Viagra use and melanoma. They also allege that Pfizer (Viagra’s manufacturer) knew or should have known about the risk and yet failed to issue any warnings.

Are There Medical Studies That Link Viagra To Melanoma?

Viagra medical studies performed by FDA link Viagra to developing melanomaOne study that was published June 10, 2014 by JAMA Internal Medicine alleged that Viagra could increase a man’s risk for melanoma by a shocking 84 percent. This was a long term study that ultimately linked melanoma to the use of the popular “little blue pill.”

The researchers in this study examined the data retrieved in The Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS), a long term study performed by the Harvard School of Public Health. This study followed the data of almost 26,000 men. It analyzed sexual health, use of Viagra, history of sun exposure, and genetic skin cancer risk. It is important to note that there are no significant associations between erectile dysfunction itself and melanoma; the only alleged association is between the medication used to treat ED and melanoma.

The medical study alleged that, regardless of the fact that variables like history of skin cancer and sun exposure were applied, men who had taken Viagra were significantly more likely to develop melanomas than men who did not. Of the men who never used Viagra, 4.3 out of every 1,000 developed melanoma skin cancer, while 8.6 out of every 1,000 men who did use it developed melanoma. This equals an 84% increase.

The authors of this study stated that this link does not prove Viagra causes melanoma and there should be more research conducted regarding the association. However, they also stated that Viagra could cause an increase in melanoma cells, which increases the melanoma risk.

What Are The Symptoms Of Melanoma?

Image of melanoma which is a side effect of using viagraA popular misconception is that melanomas will always appear as a mole, which is not true. The first signs and symptoms that you should look for are a change in a mole that you already have, or the development of a new pigmented (colored) or unusual-looking growth on your skin.

According to the Mayo Clinic, melanomas have the ability to develop anywhere on your body. They will most often appear in areas that have had some exposure to the sun, including your back, legs, arms and even face. They can also occur in locations that don’t see as much exposure to the sun, like the soles of your feet, palms of your hands, and even fingernail beds. Melanomas can also occur on otherwise normal-appearing skin. These are the hidden melanomas and are usually more common in people with darker skin.

What Are Melanoma Statistics?

Viagra drug connected to the development of Melanoma and has lead to many Viagra LawsuitsMedical professionals diagnose about 3.5 million cases of skin cancer every year in all different variations. According to the American Cancer Society, around 76,000 diagnoses are melanoma. It is noted that the highest rate of increase for melanoma is among men age 50 and older, which also happens to be the targeted age group for erectile dysfunction medications like Viagra.

There have been recent medical studies linking an increased risk of melanoma in patients taking Viagra. When melanoma is discovered early, it can be treatable. However, it is also responsible for as many as 10,000 deaths every year in the United States. People who are taking the drug and people who may have a high risk of developing skin cancer should check in with their doctors.
