A study published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found a higher risk of death in patients treated with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) when compared to patients treated with other acid reducing therapies or patients who were not treated with any medication. The results indicated that long-term treatment increased the risks associated with PPI use. The study involved a group of 349,312 U.S. veterans who were followed for a period of 5.71 years. During the course of the study, it became clear that the patients who were using PPIs were more prone to certain types of life threatening diseases, such as the development of kidney failure. Furthermore, many patients who are treated with PPIs already have other serious conditions, which can make them more vulnerable to the side effects that PPI treatment can have. These risks and injuries have been the subject of many heartburn medication lawsuits.
Why is the Use of PPI Drugs Dangerous?
PPI medications such as Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid, and Protonix are commonly used to treat symptoms of acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease, which typically include frequent heart burn and indigestion. They work by blocking the production of acid in the stomach, and thus relieving the symptoms caused by stomach acid. Recent studies and reports have linked these medications to serious conditions such as kidney failure, liver disease, and even an increased risk of strokes. Many patients who were prescribed PPIs have suffered acute kidney injuries and some have had to undergo dialysis treatments as a result. It is important for patients who may be treated with PPIs to carefully weigh the potential risks and dangers associated with these medications.
