What is Viagra?

Viagra which has been connected to the side effect of melanomaViagra (generic name sildenafil citrate) is a popular brand-name medication, which was introduced by pharmaceutical company Pfizer in 1998 for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. Pfizer was aggressive in marketing and advertising Viagra and it soon became well known as the “little blue pill” generating billions of dollars in annual sales for the company. However, it appears that Pfizer may not have shared crucial information about the risk of melanoma or skin cancer from using Viagra.

Recent Studies

As a pharmaceutical company, Pfizer had the duty and the obligation to consumers to do its due diligence and comprehensively test any drug it put on the market. Viagra’s link to melanoma was not discovered by the independent medical community for well over a decade after the drug was introduced. In June 2014, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association’s (JAMA) Internal Medicine journal found a link between Viagra use and melanoma.

The study stated that men who take Viagra are 84 percent more likely to be diagnosed with skin cancer compared to men who are not using the drug. Researchers reviewed data involving more than 25,000 men over 10 years to draw this conclusion. The researchers also excluded erectile dysfunction itself as a factor in the melanoma risk.

Symptoms of Melanoma

Melanoma from the use of ViagraOur infographic also talks about the symptoms of melanoma that consumers who are taking Viagra would be well advised to monitor. Some of the common skin cancer symptoms include moles that are growing in size, that look unusual or are not uniform in appearance. Itchy skin, irritated skin or bleeding may also be symptoms of melanoma.
