Middletown is south of Portsmouth and north of Newport which gives the town its name “Middletown”. It has a population of 16,150 residents according to a 2010 census. The land for Middletown was set apart in 1731, then was officially incorporated in 1743. It became a town after issues including unjust taxation and growing population caused freeholders in the northern section of Newport to petition for independence.
Some historic sites in Middletown include Boyd’s Windmill built in 1810, The Bailey Farm which was built in 1838 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, and The Paradise School which was built in 1875 and held classes up until 1955. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and is now a small museum after the Middletown Historical Society acquired the building in 1976 and restored it. Charlie Day, who’s an actor on the hit television show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, grew up in Middletown.
