The Environmental Working Group (EWG) produced a report revealing unsafe levels of glyphosate in popular cereal brands after testing 21 different types. EWG designated a specific health benchmark that is safe for children to consume and only 4 out of the 21 brands met that safety benchmark.
Meanwhile, brands like Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal and Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Crunch revealed significantly high levels of glyphosate. The main cereal producing company, General Mills, is now looking into safer methods to reduce the amount of glyphosate found in cereals.
What is Glyphosate?
Glyphosate is one of the main chemicals used in the popular herbicide known as Roundup. Roundup is a weed killer that many citizens and companies use to maintain yards. Even more so, Roundup is used in the farming of oats. Oat farmers utilize Roundup right before the oats are ready to harvest because it kills them quickly and allows for faster harvesting of the oats. That is why a lot of the cereals that tested high for glyphosate involved the ingredients of oats.
Why is Glyphosate Considered Dangerous?
Glyphosate yields an increased risk of developing cancer by 41% with high exposure. In fact the World Health Organization (WHO) declared glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans” in 2015. In addition, California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment officially classified glyphosate as being carcinogenic to humans.
Recent litigation against the main manufacturer of Roundup, Monsanto, has revealed a juries willingness to believe the causal link between Roundup and the development of cancers like non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
